There’s a killer on the loose....

There’s a killer on the loose – terrorizing business owners, entrepreneurs and freelancers around the world.

He’s silent. He’s sneaky. He’s deadly.

And his name is “Burnout”.

You probably are acquainted with this killer. You may even flirt with him more than you’re willing to admit.

Meanwhile, he’s got his hand on your back, looking for a place to put his knife.

Okay, I think I’ve taken this metaphor as far as I can take it.

In case you haven’t already gathered, today I want to tackle the concept of burnout.

What creates it, what feeds it, and how you can side-step it all together and create a thriving business without it completely strangling the life out of you.

First – Let’s define a couple of things

Contrary to what you might have been told, there is a very distinct difference between burnout and exhaustion.

Everybody gets tired. Biological fact. Not a surprise to any of you (I hope).

Your body and mind require rest in order to function properly, and when they don’t get that rest, bad things happen.

What I just described is “exhaustion”. It’s the feeling that your tank is empty and you just need some rest and some time to recharge.

Most of the time, when I’m exhausted, the solutions are simple:

  • A good night’s sleep
  • A good meal with good friends
  • Reading a book just for fun
  • Engaging in a hobby that is not connected to my business
  • Exercise (do not underestimate the power of endorphins)

Giving my body and mind a jolt of energy by disengaging from certain aspects of my business will bring me back down to earth and fill my tank back up.

Burnout is a different monster entirely.

Burnout is not mere fatigue or exhaustion. It is a state of mind.

It is what happens when you go far past the point of exhaustion, and you start to become completely disconnected from your business, the work you do, and your “why”.

Every day feels like a week. Every week feels like a month.

You’re still “showing up” each day – but you secretly wish…

... you secretly wish you were doing anything else.

…you secretly wish you were doing anything else.

On the surface, your business might even look like it’s doing very well. Your friends may think that you have it all figured out, and that you are happy as can be.

But, the reality is, you spend most of your time wondering if you should even keep going… or if you should just call it quits and do something else. Or throw yourself into a 9-5 like most of the people you know.

Sound familiar?

Maybe you’re there right now. If you are, I want you to read this next part carefully:

Most people give up right before things start to turn around. One thing that is baked into the DNA of every successful freelancer, business owner or service provider is that they will never, ever give up.

“But Taylor,” I hear you saying, “I don’t think I can take another day of this feeling. Every day I feel like I am rubbing my forehead against a cheese grater.”

Let me pull back the curtain on 2 things that will help you beat down the burnout you feel and get back on track to creating the business of your dreams.

#1 - Get Clarity

I can guarantee you with 100% certainty that if you are feeling really and truly burnt out (not just exhausted), it stems from a lack of clarity.

Somewhere, in the hustle and bustle of serving clients – the long nights digging into projects, the lengthy email chains, the time away from family and friends, dealing with varying client expectations, the stress of trying to attract a steady stream of new clients – you lost sight of your “why”.

Why did you start doing this in the first place?

  • Freedom?
  • Money?
  • A creative outlet?
  • The ability to do work you actually cared about on your own terms?

There are any number of reasons to start freelancing and serving clients.

I know what I’m talking about here. Freelancing changed my life in a very literal sense.

I went from making below minimum wage working at a church, to making $30K/month as a freelance copywriter. And from there to being the owner of multiple 7 and 8 figure businesses.

I had clarity. That’s how.

I had a complete mastery of my “why”. Backwards, forwards and sideways.

If you are struggling with your “why” and that is the reason you feel burnt out right now, then I want to give you a piece of advice that will help you tremendously.

Your “why” can (and SHOULD) change over time.

Let me explain.

When I first got started, my “why” was simple. I wanted to stop being poor. Makes sense, right?

Once I got up to $30K per month, however, I was no longer poor. I had more money than my wife or I really needed to live the kind of life we had always wanted.

So, my “why” needed to expand, and become much larger than just money.

That’s when my mindset shifted toward legacy and impact that would reverberate well beyond my years on this earth.

Let me encourage you. If you are feeling stuck and wondering if it’s worth going on, sit down, pull out a notebook and a pen and try to define your “why”.

If you have trouble defining it, then maybe you need to start there. Actually figure out why you are doing this at all.

If you have no issue defining it, great! Now stop and think. Is your “why” still accurate? Or have you and your business outgrown your original reason for getting started? Is it time to expand your “why”?

I do an exercise like this once per year. It serves as both an internal barometer, and also as an endless source of inexhaustible energy!

#2 - Get Community

Freelancers and entrepreneurs are a rare breed.

Nearly every one of them that I have helped over the years has a lone wolf mentality.

They start their client business, they put in the work, and, when things get tough, they pull themselves up by their bootstraps and they soldier through every obstacle.

It’s genuinely marvelous if you ask me. They are made of some of the toughest stuff on earth.

However, if lack of clarity is the main ingredient in a burnout cocktail, then lack of community is the shaker from which that cocktail is poured.

Isolationism and an “I have to do this myself” approach will land you squarely in the cross-hairs of burnout.

I would have given up many, many times over had it not been for a system of coaches, peers, and groups who propped me up at my lowest moments and gave me the feedback that kept me going.

If there is one massive takeaway from this lesson, it’s this.

Do everything that you possibly can to get around other freelancers, service providers, and business owners. Whatever that looks like.

There is nothing that compares to the compounded learning that takes place when you are among like-minded professionals all striving toward the goal of building a sustainable, life-giving business!

If you’re looking for a place to start, let me just giftwrap this one for you and hand it to you.

There is even a special training we dropped in the group a few weeks back that goes into greater detail on how you can escape burnout (featuring the amazing Candice Storely – an unbelievably talented freelancer herself).

You CAN do this, friend

If you retain nothing else from what you’ve read here today, remember this.

You can do this.

You are more than capable.

Burnout will not take you down if you do not let it.

Follow the two steps I outlined here –

  • Get clarity on why you’re doing this (and expand/adjust your “why” if needed)
  • Take every opportunity to get in the same space as people who are trying to do what you want to do – and be as vulnerable as you can so that they can help you

This may seem simplistic, especially compared to the weight of the burn out you may be feeling.

But I am living proof that you can (and will) come out on the other side of this, and be absurdly successful. You have all of the ingredients for greatness inside of you.

You can make it out of this season. Trust me.

Always in your corner,

Taylor Welch
