Getting people to give you money

HEY.

So the first time I got a big project (big to me at the time was anything over $5,000), it was electrifying…

…For about 20 minutes. (Things got bad, fast)

For a while I’d been charging $500 to $2,000 for projects… I’d never gone “high ticket” and – embarrassingly – I didn’t really feel like what I could do was worth more than $2k…

Then a project opportunity came along… I didn’t want it (because I’d just closed a lot of deals that month and was busy).

I went to send the email proposal, at $2.5k. But, last minute, decided that I’d really rather not have to do the project, so I changed my number…

To $10k.

And… they accepted, and paid it immediately.

I called my wife and said, “Babe, oh my gosh, I just made a lot of money, let’s go to a nice dinner tonight to celebrate!”

Then I phoned a restaurant to make reservations, a small place here in town called Cafe Fontana (my wife’s favorite Italian place).

Reservations were set for 6pm, and I was floored with gratitude, so thankful that I had the unique privilege of earning an income from my expertise (and a good income, at that)…

Then, the…

ONE SEC.

Okay, back… I’m at Starbucks, and one of my buddies who’s supposed to be taking me hunting with him this season just came up to say hello.

I love working at Starbucks but sometimes it’s a bustle of activity and hard to focus!

Back to the story…

… So we had dinner reservations for 6pm. But by the time I met my wife at Cafe Fontana, the weight of it had kicked in…

It was awful.

“$10,000????” I thought…

“Are you freaking crazy insane?… How in the world am I going to make this service worth $10,000???”

Then…

I can't do this. I should give the money back…” and then, immediately after, “WTF you are not giving the money back you need to grow up NOW.”

And a whole barrage of self-defeating, back-and-forth thoughts. Anybody who's made a quite a bit of money in a short amount of time remembers what this is like the first time…

You see, despite what most people believe, it can be really tough making a lot of money…

And the first thing we had to help her with was being okay with making that kind of money…

…And that is the goal. More money, for less time and less effort.
