Really weird habit helps you write better copy

When I was a kid, my mom used to get these candles right around the holiday times.

Just as the weather started getting cold, sure enough, I’d come home to Pumpkin Pie and White Barn and Autumn Wreath and a slew other festive smelling candles…

The smell would fill up the entire house. And I LOVED it.

But my all time favorite candles were Woodwicks…

They crackle when you light them, and you can literally hear them as they burn.

It always reminded me of being outside camping by the fire or something.

(Let me bring this around, it will tie into marketing I promise)

Anyways…

When I first started learning copy, I would copy out (by hand) these long giant sales letters…

Gary Bencivenga taught me that the best way to learn and stay sharp at this copy business, was to longhand copy out the best ads in history…

I did this every day… for over a year.

And sure enough, every time I would copy out my ads, I’d light a Woodwick…

For some reason, the best copy always seems to ‘crackle’ when you read it…

So I started buying these candles to help put me “in the zone” when writing.

Literally to this day, when I’m sitting down to whip up a promotion or write copy for a client, I have a Woodwick on my desk.

It’s a neurolinguistic trick.

The senses (smell, sound, etc) elicit memories associated with them.

Sometimes they can be so strong you’ll hear people say things like, “I can almost see it now.”

The memories re-run in your brain and bring up the same emotions you were feeling at the time of your memory…

You can use this when writing copy or building your business.

Take a memory that made you feel confident, strong, protected, and excited about the future – and use it to get “in state” whenever you want to write good copy…

I know some fantastic copywriters who do this with music…

Or, they only write their material at Starbucks where they are around the sights, smells and background noise that help them produce…

Whatever your “thing” is, use it. Don’t fight it.

And, if you’re at the stage where it just doesn’t make sense anymore to be writing your own marketing…

But, you want consistent promotions, sales, and profits coming in the door and growing your business…

Go here and let’s have a chat.

That’s all for now! Talk tomorrow…
