Here's the most underrated (and effective) piece of advice I can give you…

Seriously, though…

Every time we sit down to put together a new marketing plan (whether a webinar, launch series, email campaign, anything) we take it through this filter I'm giving you today…

There's an old story that Zig Ziglar used to tell…

A cat hops onto the kitchen stove, and burns its paw on the burner. And the cat, being the quick learners they all are, decides it will now not only avoid the stove, it will avoid kitchens… altogether.

Forever.

That cat will be terrified of kitchens, because it will associate the kitchen with the pain of burning itself on the stove…

Here's the reality: you've got to remember your marketing is just like this.

The people you've been trying to reach (unsuccessfully) see whatever it is you're doing, and think, “I've been burned by this before.”

And so they don't trust you…

And they don't reach out to you…

And they ignore you out of sheer self-preservation.

In order to reach them (and, thus, help them), you've gotta be different. You can't look or smell like the others…

Or you'll be ignored by association…

When everybody else is “zigging” – you have to “zag.”

You have to show up and feel “different.”
